Widget Satchel is a platformer that isn’t bad or good, it’s just okay. The graphics look good, the overall presentation is solid as well. The UI is fairly polished and intuitive. There doesn’t seem to be any technical issues, both performance wise and bug wise. It has the framework of a good game, but never finds its footing.
The gameplay’s main feature is that you get slower and less agile as you gather widgets (the game’s form of money). I don’t particularly like this mechanic, but it isn’t a game ruiner either. The big issue with the game for me was the clunky and awkward platforming. This is mostly preference based rather than an issue everyone will experience. There seemed to be an ideal amount of widgets you wanted to carry that gave you middle of the road speed. When you have too few widgets, you run too fast and are difficult to control. When you have too many, the game becomes extremely slow and boring, combined with the low jump height restricting you to only low platforms. I think some people will feel fine with this and others will hate it.
I’m going to cautiously recommend the game to anyone who isn’t bothered by the core weight mechanic in the game. Everyone else will probably be too frustrated with it to enjoy the game.
