GUN GODZ is a first-person shooter heavily inspired by classic games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. If you’ve played either of those games, you know what to expect from GUN GODZ. It keeps true to the feel of Wolfenstein 3D, without any new mechanics and almost no modernization. This is occasionally to the point of being a problem, as the game fails to really differentiate itself, at least in a gameplay sense.
GUN GODZ has an almost identical combat system as Wolfenstein 3D. You get a handful of basic weapons, but you need to explore each level to find ammo for them. Being a recent game, the shooting controls are much more intuitive than the original keyboard-based control scheme. It’s a necessary improvement in this day and age, but outside of this, the game comes off like a fantastic batch of custom levels for Doom, rather than a truly new game. This is obviously by design, but it still makes the gameplay stale to me.
The only unique thing about GUN GODZ is the presentation and aesthetic. It features a unique hip-hop soundtrack that complements the visuals perfectly. It has an alien vibe while retaining enough catchiness to ensure that it doesn’t get too weird for the average player. The visual design of the world is great, albeit relatively unvaried. There are only 5 or so different environments, although it’s also a free game, so a lack of content isn’t actually a deal breaker.
GUN GODZ could have been a lot better than it is. If the game had a price tag and a budget to match, I would have loved to see a more fleshed out world with a greater range of environments, weapons and enemies. As it stands, GUN GODZ is a fun way to spend an hour or so, but it’s far from a must play shooter.
