Devolverland Expo Review

Devolverland Expo is an interactive gaming exposition, intended to take the place of actually attending one. It has some gameplay elements, but their primary purpose is to hold your attention as you explore the virtual expo.

While Devolverland Expo is probably best classified as an action/adventure game, it really feels like its own genre. It is essentially one giant ad for Devolver Digital, but they package it in such a unique way that it makes you want to see what comes next. The gameplay is mediocre at best, but the true highlight is the visuals.

Most of your game time will be spent exploring the expo and getting a feel for each game they are showing off. The design of each game section is great, with a lot of little details that add to the experience as a whole. Each section thematically fits with the game, although it tends to be undercut by the trailers, which are usually only decent. There is a lot of room for improvement if they decide to do this again in the future, such as replacing trailers with a demo or some sort of interactive experience. Still, I think they did a great job packaging their marketing in a way that is engaging to the viewer, and even encourages you to keep exploring.

As a game, Devolverland Expo is pretty bad, but it’ll probably be interesting to you if you are at all intrigued by some of Devolver Digital’s upcoming games. I thought it was a fresh take on video game marketing, but most of the enjoyment was from how novel the idea was, rather than actually having fun playing.
